How to Stop Markers Bleeding Through Coloring Book Pages

Stop marker bleed-through (or at least reduce it): backing sheets, paper choices, lighter layers, and which marker types behave best on coloring books.

Updated February 2, 2026

Step 1: protect the next page

Always put a backing sheet behind the page you're coloring. This doesn't magically stop bleed-through, but it prevents ruining the next page and reduces ghosting.

Step 2: change how you color (lighter layers)

  • Use lighter pressure and fewer passes.
  • Fill large areas with a brush tip (faster, fewer strokes).
  • Let the area dry before adding a second layer.

Step 3: pick the right tool for the paper

If your book paper is thin, water-based markers usually behave better than alcohol markers. If you want alcohol-marker blends, print the page on thicker paper instead of fighting the book paper.

Step 4: if you can print, upgrade your paper

Printing (or photocopying) is the biggest improvement you can make when you want alcohol-marker blends. With Kolorio AI, snap your coloring page to get a color guide, then print/photocopy onto thicker marker-friendly paper for your marker test pages.

FAQ

Can I use alcohol markers in a coloring book without bleed-through?

Usually not on typical book paper. You can reduce it, but alcohol ink is designed to soak in. Printing on thicker paper is the best fix.

Do gel pens bleed through?

Not usually, but they can ghost on very thin paper and can smear if you layer them over wet marker ink.
