How to Shade and Add Highlights with Markers (Simple Method)
Add depth to coloring pages with markers: a beginner-friendly shading method using 2-3 values, plus easy highlights with gel pen or acrylic marker.
The simplest shading system: 3 values
- Base (light): the main color.
- Shadow (mid): where the form turns away from light.
- Deep shadow (dark): tiny accents for contrast.
Where to put shadows on cute coloring pages
- Under chins, hats, and hair.
- Under overlapping objects (overhang shadows).
- At the bottom of rounded shapes (simple grounding).
- Inside folds and corners.
Highlights: keep them tiny
Highlights look best when they are small and intentional. A white gel pen or acrylic marker can add glossy dots, edge shines, and sparkle accents once the marker ink is dry.
Make it consistent across pages
